I am assuming that the question is about a sequence, not a series. The two are related but are not the same.

Given any number it is easy to find a rule based on a polynomial of order 6 such that the first six numbers are as listed in the question and the next is the given number. There are also non-polynomial solutions.

The simplest polynomial of order 5 is

Un = (-87n5 + 1540n4 - 9965n3 + 28460n2 - 34228n + 14880)/120 where n = 1, 2, 3, ...

Accordingly, the next number is -107.

Nth term of the sequence 20 17 14 11 8?

This appears to be a declining arithmetic series. If it is, the next term is 5, because each term is 3 less than the preceding term.=================================The 'N'th term is: [ 23 - 3N ].

How do you find the nth term for this pattern- 10 20 40 80 160?

The first term is 10. Dividing (say) the 3rd term by the 2nd term gives 40/20 = 2 Dividing any two successive terms in this manner results in the same answer. Then 2 is the common ratio. The general formula for the nth term of a Geometric Progression or Series is :- a(n) = ar^n-1.....where a is the first term and r is the common ratio. For the pattern provided, a(n) = 10 x 2^n-1
