The first ABBA single to reach number 1 anywhere in the world was "He Is Your Brother", their second single, released on Nov. 1, 1972. It hit #1 on the Swedish radio chart, Tio i topp.

The first ABBA chart-topper outside Sweden was "Ring Ring", which reached #1 in Belgium in 1973. Their first #1 in a predominantly English-speaking country (U.K., Ireland) was Waterloo in 1974. The first ABBA #1 in Australia was "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" (1975). In the U.S., ABBA's first #1 was "Fernando" (1976, on the Adult Contemporary chart; their first and only #1 on the American pop/rock chart was "Dancing Queen", later in 1976).

The first ABBA single to hit #1 on any chart was "He Is Your Brother". It was their second single (after "People Need Love"), released in Scandanavia on November 1, 1972. It reached #1 only in Sweden.

Abba's first chart-topper outside Sweden was "Ring Ring" (1973), which hit #1 in Belgium. (It was the first of 15 Abba #1s in Belgium.)

Abba's first number one in an English-speaking country was "Waterloo" (1974), which peaked in the UK and Ireland. The first Australian #1 was S.O.S. (1975). Their first #1 in the US was "Dancing Queen" in 1976.

It depends on what country you are talking about. They had their first hit as a foursome in 1972 with Ring Ring in Sweden. They didn't top the charts in the US until 1976 with Dancing Queen. They had eight number ones in the UK.

In Sweden Abba's first hit was "People need love" but their first big hit was Ring ring (they made the top 3 Swedish combined charts with Ring ring in English swedish and self titled LP) in 1973 .

Abba's breakthrough internationally was Waterloo in 1974, in both sides of the Atlantic !
