This is newtons third law in action, which states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. If you push on a wall with 50 newtons of force, the wall will not move, and it will have no acceleration. To make the sum of the forces zero, the wall must push back on you with the same 50 newton force.

This is implying that you do not push on the wall hard enough to were it breaks. If it does this it means you are overcoming the force that the wall can push back.

A force of 50 Newtons has a magnitude of exactly 50 Newtons.

If you're more comfortable with English units, 50 newtons is equivalent to a force of about

11.25 pounds (rounded).

Suppose a book weighs 35 newtons and you apply a force of 50 newtons to lift what is the net force acting on the book?

85 newtons, up . =================== Nope. The force of gravity is 35 newtons, directed down. The force of your mighty out-stretched arm is 50 newtons, directed up. The net force on the book is 15 newtons directed up, so that's the direction in which the book accelerates. (At 15/35 = 3/7 of a 'G' .) Exactly the same analysis as you'd apply to a rocket launch.
