Growth medium, also called culture medium, or nutrient broth, is a solution freed of all microorganisms by sterilization that contain the substances required for the growth of microorganisms. Growing microorganisms on growth medium allows for the cultivation, isolation, selection, differentiation and identification of said microorganisms. The microorganisms that may be grown in growth mediums include: bacteria, protozoans, algae, and fungi.

Bacteria and even some small plants like moss will grow on agar. Some need additional contents such as red blood cells and other will need additional elements. Agar plates may be formulated as either permissive, with the intent of allowing the growth of whatever organisms are present or selective, with the intent of only allowing growth a particular organisms.

Often the answer will not included Legionella, but it is very selective and requires many additional elements, but can be seen with these. The person who is doing the culturing has to have this bacteria in mind to pick the correct agar.
