Best Answer

Biomass burns cleanly without releasing additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, however its ash pollution contributes to global warming when it lands on snow or ice, and when the particles mix with water vapour droplets in the air.

Advantages

  • Good for environment as the carbon dioxide it releases is only months old so is part of the normal carbon cycle.
  • Biomass doesn't emit additional carbon dioxide (CO2), like fossil fuels. It releases the CO2 that it took in during its short lifetime. Using biomass instead of fossil fuels prevents further addition of CO2 in our atmosphere.
  • Biomass can be used to make a variety of fuels to generate electricity
  • Biomass is used for the production of chemical products
  • Biomass waste can help in reducing disposal costs
  • Biomass waste can extend the life of landfills
  • biomass is renewable.
  • it can make our life easier
  • Can use waste products and therefore can have negative fuel costs
  • Can create several products - electricity/heat/biogas/biofuel
  • Very large resource
  • Lots of different technology
  • released in several ways
  • Theoretically inexhaustible fuel source
  • When direct combustion of plant mass is not used to generate energy (i.e. fermentation, pyrolysis, etc. are used instead), there is minimal environmental impact
  • Alcohols and other fuels produced by biomass are efficient, viable, and relatively clean-burning
  • Available throughout the world
  • Biomass fuels are sustainable. The green plants from which biomass fuels are derived fix carbon dioxide as they grow, so their use does not add to the levels of atmospheric carbon. In addition, using refuse as a fuel avoids polluting landfill disposal.
  • Biomass can pay a dual role in greenhouse gas mitigation, both as an energy source to substitute fossil fuels (bioenergy) and as a carbon sink.

From the perspective of CO2 emissions, biofuels would be expected to make a smaller net addition of CO2 to the atmosphere. The assumption is that the biofuels came from biomass that came from plants. The plants, while growing, would be removing CO2 from the atmosphere which is released back into the atmosphere when the biofuel is burned. That is a bit oversimplified however. For example, since the processing of the biofuels tends to release some greenhouse gases, the net reduction of greenhouse gas releases compared to fossil fuels is less than 100%. There are other complex factors that further limit the net benefits. The actual reduction is in the range from about 20% to 80% depending on how the other complex factors play into the overall picture.
