The benefit of jury duty, besides the feel-good nonsense of gaining a sense of satisfaction in fulfilling your civic duty, is that you get a free education in the law. Being a part of a court case allows you see how a trial is conducted, hear well reasoned opposing legal arguments from two well educated people, and understand more about the fabric of law that holds society together. In the information age, more knowledge is always beneficial to you. As a juror, you'll learn the elements of a certain crime or tort (civil wrong), and then be required to apply the facts before you against those elements to see if they are present. Knowing that basic process of how the court decides legal issue will be a huge advantage to you when you find yourself involved in a legal situation.

A jury is a group of your equals who decide on your case as a group, not as individuals. This leads to a relatively balanced reasonable verdict. If there was just one person, that person could make decisions that would affect your life drastically without a second opinion

In the US, a trial by a jury of a defendant's peers, is the best way to prevent an innocent person from being wrongfully convicted. To convict a person on trial requires that the prosecution convinces a jury of twelve people, sometimes less, that the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Any chance that the defendant is not guilty is further enhanced in that the defendant does not have to take the witness stand unless done so voluntarily. All twelve jurors must be unanimous in their decision.

A disadvantage of the jury is that none of the jurors have legal expertise and can be persuaded by clever lawyers who confuse the jurors with technical language and sway their opinions
