Not all tribes farmed. Those tribes who did, usually did not move from place to place as the nomadic tribes did. They were able to grow and harvest their food. Then they dried much of it to be used during the long winter months. They would save some of the seeds each year to grow the following year.

Many Native American's were well practiced in the art of "Farming" before Christopher Columbus was born. In fact their type of planting "Milpa" produces more calories per acre than European techniques, and is less susceptible to infestations of insects. There are several ongoing studies by Dutch researchers in South America.

The only 'new' concept brought by European settlers was the domestication of meat bearing animals (farm animals). Which reduced their dependance on hunting.
