If he talks a lot about the girlfriend right before you, it may be no big deal. It takes time to get over someone and sometimes not until after fall for the person you're dating. If he was with her for a while and immediately before the two of you started dating, the last experiences he had would include her and its impossible to not bring her up until he has more experiences in life (with you hopefully) to talk about. It's better he's communicating with you rather than trying to hide things.
Ultiimately it depends on what he's saying about her. If it's stuff like "that time I was out with HER and this happened" then he's just referencing and its no big deal. He's talking more about what happened and he's just not leaving her name out. In fact, he's not trying to hide it which is good. If he's talking extra-fondly and making up things to talk about because he's thinking of her then there is defintiely a problem.
Don't sell yourself short though... if you have a bad feeling and strange things other than what he's saying happens, trust your instincts. Just don't let your insecurity get in the way.
