The term used for an organism living in or on another depends on the nature of the relationship.

- If the relationship is mutually beneficial (mutalism) then the organism can be called a symbiont.

- If the relationship does not benefit the host, the organism can be called a parasite.

Parasites can be endoparasites, which live inside the host, or ectoparasites, which live on the host.

Some biologists use the term symbiont for any organism in a close interaction with another. This would mean parasites could also be called symbionts.

If an organism lives in or on another organism there may be a symbiotic situation taking place. If the host of the organism is being damaged by the other organism, parasitism is in occurrence because one is benefiting at the expense of another. If the host and and the other organism are both benefiting, mutualism is taking place.

A parasite lives in an organism, and generally takes the nutrients from the organism but not enough to kill it because then it wouldn't have a "home" essentially or get nutrients without working.

when an organism lives on another organism and doesnt harm it or helps it is like a lichen. this forms a symbiotic relationship with a tree or plant and sometimes acts as mychorizae
