Digital signals have discrete encoded states that they switch between. They can only assume the defined encoded values. Errors can often be easily detected and sometimes corrected.

Analog signals are continuous and change smoothly from one value to another, passing through all intermediate values. There is no way to identify errors.

Analog signals are built on variations, where as digital signals are (relatively) set it stone.

example; an analog signal based on variations in amplitude will change the wattage (or power) to change the signal which during transit can diminish or change in unexpected and unwanted ways (consider an AM radio in a lightning storm, every time lightning strikes the EMP causes the radio to pop or crackle)

Frequency modulation (also a form of analog signal), which is currently the standard, varies the frequency at which a signal is sent, and though less susceptible to interference still has to deal with degradation of the signal and how that affects its translation back into the original data.

Digital signals are more like words in a book, instead of dealing with a changing frequency or amplitude, you deal with set values. though degradation can still be a factor, random "noise" is cut out as your looking for very specific identifiers and all other signals would be ignored.

This is achieved as most digital signals operate in a binary system of ones and zeros where one is equal to 5 volts and zero is equal to zero volts, so if a signal of 2 volts comes it its simply disregarded as noise where as amplitude modulation would consider as part of the intended signal.

Analog is like someone whistling, it can be either loud or quite and everything in between. Digital is like Morse Code, either there is a letter or there isn't.
