∙ 11y agoElectrons do not actually orbit an atom. There is only a probability of where an electron will be found, and the highest areas of probability appear to make clouds surrounding the nucleus.
The reason the term "orbitals" is used is because electrons with higher energy are more likely to be farther away from the nucleus and electrons with lower energy are more likely to be closer to the nucleus.

Since electrons are so hard to detect then they would call this volume or region of the atom an electron cloud because the electron cloud is a volume or region where they know that electrons are likely to be there even if they are hard to find. Or maybe the electron cloud is where they can also know the different sub- orbitals or subshells of the electrons.
