If you ever wondered why the first liner lasted so long, and each subsequent liner lasted about one third to one half as long, the major answer is the thickness of the original liner. In some rare instances, there could be other minor reasons:1. erosion of the bottom if cement/vermiculite was not installed; 2. failure to accurately measure the pool; 3. failure to "seat" the liner properly before cutting the steps.
Pool company's don't want to sell anything other than 20mil, for numerous reasons among which are: (a) It's too heavy for one man to deliver and install; (b) You won't need another liner soon enough; (c) arrogance, their way or no way.
Typical cost difference to pool store is around $400.00 Good Luck!
