The Maltese is a natural ham with a lively personality. Because he's so people-oriented, he takes well to training and responds to positive reinforcements such as food rewards, praise, and play.

I have a Maltese and she's easy to train if your persistint and have treats, but make sure to start at an early age. My Maltese forgot all her tricks when we got a new dog...so remember to practice them alot.

I think they are. I have a 3 year old Maltese and a 3 year old Maltipoo. By far, the Maltipoo is faster at learning and taking instructions. I taught him to beg, wash his face and pray. He does that religiously now several times a day on his own. When I say I taught him to wash his face, I mean he takes his paws, strokes his face on either side, prays, washes his face, prays and again once or twice more. On the other hand, my Maltese is not a showman! He doesn't seem to want to learn as Jerry, the Maltipoo.

They are considered to be one of the harder breeds to train, especially with house training. Mainly because they are not very food oriented.
