No. The story of Romeo and Juliet is an old one and one which was frequently retold. Its earliest telling in its current form was by Luigi da Porta in 1530, who blended an earlier story of Mariotta and Gianozza with Pyramus and Thisbe from Ovid's Metamorphoses, renamed the lovers and set the story in Verona. He then claimed that the story was a true story, which it clearly isn't.

No, although the tourist bureau in Verona would like you to believe it. There is a long list of similar stories in which the characters' names are sometimes not Romeo and Juliet, and the events sometimes happen in other places than Verona, and the details of the story change from time to time, each story being based on the ones that came before it. Scholars think the story may have its origins in Ovid's story of Pyramus and Thisbe.

Although there were families called the Montecchi and Capuletti, only the Montecchi came from Verona. The Capuletti were from Cremona. There is no historical record of any events such as those in the play ever happening with these families.
