In a word, yes. Major depression is the prime cause of suicide and destroys the lives of those who suffer, even if they don't kill themselves. It is better to bring on the "big guns" early, rather than fool around and lose a patient.

It may take some time to adjust medications. Psych medications work differently on individuals, since each individual has somewhat different combinations of the more than 1000 chemicals that bathe the brain. Often several must be tried, and if one works, is taken for a while and then discontinued, it will often fail to work again. So don't fool around to "see if I can do without it, now that I'm feeling better." Why do you imagine you are feeling better?

All medications with antidepressant action can precipitate an initial dysphoric period (after initiation) of the medication - which may even include suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This is most likely to happen in the younger age groups - under age 26. However, after start-up, medications, such as Abilify, actually help to treat depression, especially in those who are only partially responsive to standard antidepressants.
