Of course they are! the most dangerous TYPE of avalanche is the slab avalanche and happens most of the time. And only if you in one. ;)

hi,this is a very good question.....in general it is around spring. when the snow has fallen down a long time ago but that there is a fine layer of fresh snow.
most of the people say that is is in the Colorado (witch is the place that killed once more than 150 people...)

Kinda-sorta, but not really. It's possible to disrupt the snow cover to set off smaller, less dangerous avalanches to prevent the build up to the big, really dangerous ones. It's also possible to build fences to change the build up of snow drifts. Or to build really chunky fences to dissipate the power and speed of an avalanche.
