Good thinking would suggest that anything rotten should be highly suspect and avoided as food. Being ripe and being rotten are not necessarily the same thing.

Ripe, as in food ripe means it is ready to pluck off the tree and eat. Like peaches, they have to be ripe. Bananas can be overripe though. In other terms I don't know another definition for ripe other than that...
It is a stereotypical food. Only monkeys in Central America could make a diet of bananas, and the bananas grown for human consumption have too much sugar when they are ripe.
