The Basset Hound is sweet, gentle, devoted, peaceful and naturally well-behaved. They fit into family life well. Their temperament should always be friendly, and never vicious, moody or harsh, and would only become so if the owners led the dog to believe he was pack leader over humans. They are mild but not timid; very affectionate with its master and friendly with children. It can be a bit stubborn with meek owners and need a firm, confident, and consistent owner who displays natural authority over the dog. Dogs need to know the rules of the house and have the humans stick to them. Bassets like to do tricks for food. It has a deep musical bark. Housebreaking is difficult, but they do well with positive reinforcement and patient, gentle training. With proper training, they are obedient, but when they pick up an interesting smell, it's sometimes hard to get their attention, as they like to follow their noses and may not even hear you calling them back. Only allow your Basset off lead in safe areas.

Basset hounds made ideal pets for families with children. They are gentle, tolerant and welcoming animals. Basset hounds get along well with other pets and are seldom aggressive to strangers. Basset hounds need daily walks, but children need to be careful when walking them because they are hunting dogs and if they get a whiff of a certain scent they may pull at the leash and a young child may have difficulty controlling them. Since basset hounds are low to the ground, young children may try to ride on their backs - this should be avoided at all costs. Basset hounds would make a good pet for a family with children, but be prepared for lots of drool, shedding and stubbornness!

Housebreaking is difficult, but they do well with positive reinforcement and patient, gentle training. They are neither easy to train, nor hard to train. NOTE: This breed has been rated as the 7th Dumbest Breed of Dog!

This breed is hard to train, but does not need much exercise. It needs a quiet lifestyle, preferably without noisy children, and can be stubborn. Other than that, the Basset Hound is quite an easy breed to own. They do not need much grooming and only need a half hour daily walk to remain happy. They do suffer from illness and health problems more than some other breeds so buy from responsible breeders. This would be a good breed for inexperienced dog owners.
