This depends on the donkey. It is instinctive for many herbivores may feel trapped in small or enclosed spaces because it is natural for them to flee if there is danger nearby, and a closed space prevents them form doing so. However, animals such as donkeys have been domesticated for a very long time and are naturally pretty calm. The reasons a donkey may be afraid of an enclosed space is probably because:

1) It has never been in a pen before and just needs a little time to get used to it, or

2) It was abused and it associates a pen with something frightening or painful.

Most donkeys are not afraid of enclosed spaces, but like all large mammals, they should always be given the option to go to a larger space like a pasture so they can live a healthy life.
