Are drug laws appropriate in today's society?

I assume you are referring to the laws which criminalise the use of certain drugs for recreation.

These laws are entirely inappropriate and do nothing to help society. They in fact case the creation of a black market and very powerful criminal organisations.

If recreational drug use was treated under law in the same way as recreational alcohol drinking then the criminal organisations that thrive through the black market would instantly loose the bulk of their revenue and so their influence. Users would be far less likely to suffer from the effects of badly cut drugs and could get help to remove addiction without becoming criminalised. And the government could make good tax revenue that would pay for the treatment of drug users through the sale of the drugs. Eventually the problem would disappear as victims of drug abuse would get the help they need to be cured!
