Amphibians need water at the beginning of their life cycle. They lay their eggs and shed their sperm in water, and the larvae live and develop in water. Reptiles do not require water in any part of their life cycle, other than to hydrate themselves, and lay leathery-shelled eggs on land.

Even though amphibians sometimes look very much alike to reptiles, they need moisture in order to survive. Some examples of amphibians are frogs and salamanders. Reptiles on the other hand are able to live in deserts and in nearly every other biome in the world.

Both are ectotherms or cold blooded.

Amphibians need water for reproduction reptiles don't

Both reproduce sexually

Amphibian means "double life". They began their lives in the water with gills and go through a metamorphosis. They then can go onto the land and breath using lungs. Reptiles do not go through this change. They hatch from hard, leathery eggs (whereas amphibian eggs are gelatinous and laid in the water or in a damp area) as miniature versions of the adult and are not tied to the water like amphibians. Reptiles have scales; amphibians have skin. These are just the basic differences. There are more.
