Some fungi can be parasites, but most are not. In general the role of fungi is as decomposers of dead matter.

Why are fungi called saprophytes?

That is like saying "Are humans vegetarians?" Because fungi are a range of eaters! From parasites (feeders on live plants, trees and organisms) to saprophytes (Feeders of dead material) to mycorrhizical fungi. (Fungi which get energy by making relationships with trees and evenly sharing nutrients)

Why are saprophytes called saprophytes?

They Live of live or Dead Organic matter

How does fungi obtain energy?

Nutritionally they are heterotrophic, they digest food outside the body and absorb it . Many are saprophytes (living off of dead material), parasites (living off of a live host) and some are mutualistic (living with another organism and helping it out).

Are bacteria and fungi decomposers?

No. Many are under that impression, but it is not the case. Some fungi form mutualistic relationships with plants, where the plant gives the fungus sugars and the fungus gives the plant water and nutrients that would be difficult or impossible for it to get. These types of fungi are called mycorrhizal fungi. Then there are endophytes, which are similar to mycorrhizae except that they are not limited to the roots, and their mycelium (the main part of the fungus, if you are talking about the so called "higher fungi" that produce mushrooms. That's my area of expertise, so I'm sorry if you mean all fungi! :( ) weave between the plant's cells throughout the plant. Then there are fungal parasites. These start by living off a tree, then eventually use different methods to kill their host (which is in the case if higher fungi usually a tree) such as deadly toxins, or damaging the trees' vital systems and then proceed to decompose it, so parasites are a bit of a mix. Some parasitic fungi live solely off the tree for a long time before killing it, so that would be predatory, not decompositional. Then, of course, there are the saprophytes, which are decomposers. I hope I answered your question, but I realize I might not have because you might have meant all fungi! :) Have a good day.

Where are Saprophytes located?

Saprophytes are plants that live on dead or decaying matter. They obtain nutriment osmotically by absorbing the products of organic breakdown. Therefore, saprophytes are likely to be found around fallen logs in woods or forests, or on heaps of plant material left to rot at the bottom of your garden.

Are mushroom parasites or saprophytes?

They are saprophytes because they live on other decaying matter for their food

Do saprophytes live on by eating plants?

Saprophytes are fungi and live of dead and decaying matter, not live plant material

Where does fungi live-?

fungi actually live in or on living organisms. They are also called saprophytes

Does parasites live in or on fungi?

in fungi

Are fungi saprophytic?

Yes,fungi are saprophytic in their mode of nutrition but this is not true for all fungi. Some fungi are parasites such as mildews and most rust species. They absorb nutrients directly from the living host cytoplasm.Besides there are some fungi which are active predators. For examplePleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom) is carnivorous predatory fungus. It decomposes the wood to fulfill its glucose requirements. To fulfill its nitrogen requirements it paralyses the nematodes, penetrate them and absorb their nutritional contents

What is an organism that cannot live on its own?

Parasites and fungi.

Why are saprophytes called saprophytes?

They Live of live or Dead Organic matter

What does a parasite live off of?

Parasites live off of living organisms. They include things such as lice, fleas, and fungus. Saprophytes, on the other hand, live off of decaying matter, and would include fly larvae (maggots).

Can fungi transfer food into energy?

No, fungi live on other organisms and feed off of them. they are parasites, not plants

What is the component?
