Grasslands are not exclusively called prairies in the US. The term "prairie" is commonly used in North America, specifically the central part of the continent. In other countries, grasslands may have different names, such as savannah in Africa, pampas in South America, or steppe in Eurasia.

They are called Prairies in Canada as well. So it's only in the USA and Canada that grasslands are called prairies, whether they are tall-grass, short-grass, or mixed short-grass prairie.

In which climate zone are grasslands located?

Grasslands are found in desserts and forests, mainly due to moderate precipitation. Annually grasslands receive 20-100 cm of precipitation which is why they are found in subtropical and temperate areas. The temperature in these regions changes from extreme cold to hot which allows grass particularly to survive versus trees and other plant life. It is quite normal for these regions to have fires due to the extreme hot temperatures, which is an example of why particular plants, more specifically tall and short grass is found in abundance in these areas. Grass has a larger probability of frequently surviving natural fires versus many other plant species. Here are a few examples of some grasslands: African savanna (another term for grasslands in this region) South America (Argentina) Canada (Prairies of Manitoba and Alberta) United States (Prairies of North Dakota and Ohio) Russia-Russian steppes

What are other names for grassland?

they might be called tropical, temperate, or artic grasslands
