Actually the truth is worse. Or at least it sounds worse. The source of the protein in Jell-O is "hide trimmings," animal tissue that is rendered, purified, filtered, and then purified again, leaving a protein called collagen.

This is from Snopes:

The production of Gelatin starts with the boiling of bones, skins and hides of cows and pigs, a process that releases the protein-rich collagen from animal tissues. The collagen is boiled and filtered numerous times, dried, and ground to a powder. Because the collagen is processed extensively, the final product is not categorized as a meat or animal product by the federal government. Very strict vegetarians avoid gelatin entirely

No, hooves do not contain the necessary collagen and is not used in making gelatin. Gelatin is, however, made by boiling animal skin, cartilage, bones, and the parts and tissues left over. This includes pork skins, horns and cattle bones.

Sadly yes. Practically all the jello contains horse hooves. If you want an alternative(if you don't want to eat horse hooves) look for jello that has a small symbol of a "K" in a triangle or a "U" in a circle. This signifies that the food is "Kosher" meaning there is no horse, pig, shrimp and various other substances in it.

This is a very old rumor. Hooves do not contain the collagen necessary to create Gelatin which is used to make Jello, and most body parts of the horse are no longer safe for human consumption, even when cooked down. Typically Jello is made from Cow and Pig hides that have been rendered down to make the gelatin.

Jell-o used to contain horse hooves, ground. After MANY years they have adapted and use only gelatin products. Back when Jell-o was first created, it wasn't for eating.
