They exist only in the movie "Underworld" and its sequels.Spiritual therianthropy, however, is real. But no self-respecting or knowledgeable therian would ever call themselves a 'Lycan'. The therian community likewise rejected "Garou", and "Lupines" when those were the popular terms for werewolves.
If you see someone going around calling themselves a Lycan, they're either a confused kiddie (whether they're therian or not), or they're a roleplayer.

∙ 12y agoNo, Lycans are not real. The term was created for the movie "Underworld". Lycanthropy is a psychological condition in which an individual suffers from the delusion that they are turning into a wild animal.
Spiritual therianthropy is the belief or feeling that one is a non-human animal in mind and/or spirit (in whole or in part). There is a spiritual therianthrope community, (often referred to as 'therian' for short).
There are also some confused therian youngsters who are going around referring to themselves as 'lycans', and, alas, more than a few roleplayers and delusional youngers who are doing the same.
As for actual physical shapeshifters--we can't be 100% sure whether they exist or not, but we CAN be sure that if they do, they aren't calling themselves "Lycans".
