Far as I know , California was involved in the Civil war between the States and we were opposed to Slavery. ehh I think I know what I am. Sheesh. I assume you are talking about the Civil War. First, it was a whole lot less expensive to ship Northern products down the Mississippi River, to the port of New Orleans than to ship them over the mountains to ports on the east coast. Unless the Union forces could rule the Mississippi River, they would not have the support of the people. Controlling the Mississippi River Valley kept midwesterners wanting the Union to win.
