In most jurisdictions around the world, parliamentary general elections are held at least once every four years. There are a handful of exceptions to this rule.
In the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Fiji, Nepal, Malaysia, Morocco, Barbados, the Central Tibetan Administration and Malta, they are held every five years.
In Australia, New Zealand and Nauru, they are held every three years.

In England, elections must be held once every five years but can be held more often. The queen has the job of calling elections. She also has the job of presenting the government's program to parliament. That way she has to work at least once a year and some years twice.

The European Elections, which are for members of the European Union to elect people to the European Parliament, are held every 5 years. Countries in Europe also have their own elections, with different countries having different systems and terms.

Election for the Scottish Parliament are held every four years. The last Scottish elections where held on May 3rd 2007 and resulted in a historic win for the Scottish National Party. In addition to this the people of Scotland vote in the British elections which are held every four years. The last British election was held on May 5th 2005. Since the United Kingdom is a member of the European Union the people of Scotland also vote in the European Elections which are held every five years. The last European elections where held in June 2004. The European Elections in 2009 will be the next election in which the people of Scotland will vote. (Unless the Scottish or British parliaments are prematurely dissolved.)
Elections in the UK are usually held every five or so years for Parliament. The previous election was held in 2010, and the next one will presumably be in 2015.
