A Labrador Retriever is a fine jogging companion, as most of the sporting breeds of dogs would be. Even little dogs can be great joggers and there are many, many mixed breeds and hybrid types that would be excellent.
Before starting a jogging routine, have your dog examined by a veterinarian to make sure that your dog is in good physical condition and can cope with the physical strain of running.
Once your dog clears the vet check, take the time to build up the distance of the jog, just as a human athlete would. Use common sense, if the weather is hot, jog early in the morning or in the evening, and bring water for your dog. Your dog's foot pads should be monitored for excessive wear, most dogs don't have a problem running on pavement or sidewalks, but be cautious in extreme hot or cold conditions. If the foot pads (or between the toes) show signs of abrasion or swelling, give time to allow healing, dog "booties" might be a helpful option.
Food should be avoided before immediate strenuous activity. A large meal followed by exercise can lead to Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus Syndrome (GDV), known as "Bloat", which usually requires surgical correction. Water can be given at any time, as long as the volume is limited to small amounts at each offering.
