The polar bear is still listed as a "Threatened" species on the Endangered Species Lists. The IUCN Red List Endangered Species List has the population trend listed in the 2011 List as "decreasing". They are losing habitat, being poisoned by Mercury and other pollutants in their food sources (since they are at the top of the food chain in the region). The Arctic is warming and ice is melting which also threatens their free range to which they are so adapted, they could not survive abrupt changes to warmer climates. They are no longer being hunted for sport from planes and icebreakers due to an international treaty, but their habitat is shrinking and hunting "grounds" are melting.
