Yes, protein is a major source of energy but we also need carbohydrates for energy, that's why athletes eat a lot of pasta before or after an event. Protein would include; cooked chicken, beef, fish, beans, tofu, cottage cheese, yogurt to mention a few.

Yes. We usually think of carbs as being our source of energy, but if you don't get enough carbohydrates or fats, amino acids from dietary protein are changed into energy. Each gram of protein can give four calories of energy, the same amount as from carbs. Any statement to the effect that "Protein builds muscle cells, while carbs give energy" would be mistaken.

Protein is not usually used for energy. However, if the body is not getting enough calories from other nutrients or from the fat stored in the body, protein is used for energy. If more protein is consumed than is needed, the body breaks the protein down and stores its components as fat.
