Best Answer

Yes, it definitely could be. Raccoons are a common carrier of rabies.

On the other hand, some people keep raccoons as pets.

Don't approach a raccoon on your own, get some help from someone with experience with wild animal capture.

Racoons will break into garbage containers and scatter the contents searcing for food. They will break into the attics of homes seeking shelter but leaving holes through which rain and snow can enter and cause significant additional damage. Raccoons can also carry diseases, including rabies.

Raccoons will eat garden and farm crops and may take young chickens. They will also turn over unsecured trash bins looking for food and will eat any pet food left out at night. If an attic or crawl space is not thoroughly secured they can also enter and cause property damage. They have been known to enter homes through pet doors and take any food they can get their paws on. Raccoons also can carry dangerous diseases such as rabies and a roundworm that can be fatal in humans.

I am not sure of your question. If you mean are they safe from extinction, the answer is yes. They are in no danger presently. If you mean are they safe to handle or touch, the answer is absolutely not. Wild or even some captive raccoons can bite and claw viciously and they can carry a number of dangerous diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Some of these are nearly 100 percent fatal in humans.

Raccoons will try to avoid any encounters with humans unless they are cornered. They have very sharp claws and teeth and know how to use them. However, raccoons can transmit a number of serious diseases and parasites to humans.

If left alone and not approached, raccoons are not dangerous., They try to avoid confrontations with humans and will usually retreat up a tree. However, they can and will bite and claw if they feel threatened. They can also carry a number of parasites and diseases that can be transmitted to humans who try to get too close.
