An organism that is made up of only one cell is known as unicellular. There are many different kinds of unicellular organisms. They are microscopic, and you need a microscope to see them.

Here is a list of some unicellular organisms:

  • amoeba
  • algae
  • euglena
  • cyclops
  • malaria parasite
  • plankton
  • protozoa
  • sporozoa
  • heliozoa
  • dino flagellates
  • hydra
  • paramecium

There are two entire kingdoms of organisms with only one cell. Life is grouped into superkingdoms and kingdoms. The definitions are not complete but will give some idea. SUPERKINGDOM PROKARYOTA (No cell nucleus - all are single celled) ...only one kingdom MONERA (bacteria) SUPERKINGDOM EUKARYOTA (Have a cell nucleus) ... kingdom PROTISTA (single celled organisms although sometimes form filaments of identical cells) ... Kingdom PLANTAE (multi-celled organisms that get their energy by photosynthesis) ... kingdom FUNGI (as for plants but get their nutrition from decayed organic matter) ... kingdom ANIMALIA (multi-celled organsisms - animals)

What does it mean for an organism to be single celled?

If an organism is single celled, it has just one cell. A bacteria is an example. We are made of many cells and we are called multicellular organisms.

How did Anton van leeuwenhoeks invention lead to the rejection of spontaneous generation?

Since he obviously helped with the improvement of the microscope, his higher lens quality helped him see a single cell organism. Well, if a single cell organism exists, spontaneous generation is corrupt. He really just proved what Zacharias Jensen did.

What does the term unicellular?

Multi-cellular and unicellular refer to the amount of cells that make up a single organism. Plants and animals are mulit-cellular organisms. An example of a uni-cellular organism is a bacteria, or omeba.

What is the differences between the human body and a single cell?

Single-cell organisms, also called protists (because they are placed in the kingdom Protozoa) contain all the devices necessary for life in a single cell. This would include devices for ingesting food, moving from place to place (in those that are motile), and eliminating waste, and possibly even defence mechanisms. The one cell of these organisms is not dependent on any other cell to survive. Human cells, on the other hand, each perform specific functions, are not self contained, and rely completely on the entire system, or a good part of it, for survival. A single human cell, removed from the body will not survive long. Ray
