Examples of this type of island would be the Bahamas, Anegada in the British Virgin Islands, Turks & Caicos, the Florida Keys, and the barrier islands of Belize are all examples of coral islands. The majority of Caribbean islands are mountainous and have a volcanic history.

Bahamas
Volcanic islands are formed of igneous rock and lava. They tend to be tall, and have steep slopes. Coral islands are calcium carbonate (chemically the same as limestone) and are formed from the secretions of sea coral- an animal. They tend to be low to the water, and relatively flat.
atolls
Islands are created by the movement of continents (which floods the surrounding areas) or by volcanoes that grow from the sea floor. Coral islands have a coral ring around the eroded volcanic rock in the center.
