∙ 13y agoSince the 17th century the Dalai Lama (a position held by successive heads of the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism) has been revered as an incarnation of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezi in Tibetan), the Bodhisattva of Compassion. A bodhisattva is someone who strives for enlightenment (buddhahood) but renounces his or her own complete enlightenment until all other beings attain it, by transferring the merit of his own actions to other beings. Even though 'technically' a bodhisattva has vowed to postpone his own buddhahood, there is really little to distinguish Chenrezi as a bodhisattva from a full-fledged buddha, so I would say yes, the Dalai Lama is regarded as a living buddha.
