It depends what you are doing with the fractions.

If you are multiplying or dividing fraction, the denominators do not need to be the same and the calculation can be carried out immediately.

If you are adding or subtracting fractions, the denominators must be the same; if you have different denominators, the fractions must first be changed into equivalent fractions with the same denominator. When the denominators are the same (or have been made the same as equivalent fractions from being different) the calculation can be carried out.

What are fractions with unlike denominators mean?

The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction. Fractions like 1/3 and 1/4 have different numbers on the bottom. Those are unlike denominators.

How do you add and subtract unlike denominators?

you make them have like denominators by multiplying so many times that they have the same denominators or you can make them have like denominators by multiplying the two

How is adding like fractions and adding unlike fractions the same?

If the denominators are not the same, then you have to use equivalent fractions which do have a common denominator . To do this, you need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. To add fractions with unlike denominators, rename the fractions with a common denominator. Then add and simplify.

What is unlike fractions?

A fraction where the denominators are different EG: 1/6 and 1/4. Like fractions are when the denominators are the same EG: 1/6 and 2/6 Hope this helped :))))

What way is subracting fractions with unlike denominators like adding fractions with unlike denominators?

If the denominators are not the same, then you have to use equivalent fractions which do have a common denominator . To do this, you need to find the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators.

What the difference between like and unlike fraction?

fractions having same denominators are like fractions & others are unlike fractions

What do like and unlike fractions mean?

Like fractions have the same denominators (bottom part of fraction), unlike fractions do not.

How does using fraction strips with like denominators make it possible to add fractions with unlike denominators?

because they are the same number

What is unlike denominators?

Two or more fractions having different denominators have unlike denominators. To do addition and subtraction operations with fractions, all fractions must be converted to have like denominators before the numerators can be added or subtracted. For example, 1/2 + 5/6 + 3/8 = 12/24 + 20/24 + 9/24 = 41/24 = 1 17/24

What is a unlike fraction?

You must have 2 fractions or more to have unlike fractions. They are fractions with different denominators such as 7/8 and 1/2. Like fractions would have the same denominator like 7/8 and 4/8.

If the denominators are different do you add them?

No. Convert them to like denominators and add the numerators.

Are different denominators like different nationalities?

No.
