yes, many of them are conversios from the inquisition when they were forced to either convert to Christianity or be killed, many of them secretly still practiced Judaism so now many people in Mexico are finding out that they are Jewish, a friend of mine was from Mexico and found out her heritage and is now a practicing Jew

There have been Jews in Mexico since Hernan Cortes defeated the Aztecs in the early 16th century, the Jews in question were Conversos. Conversos were Jews who publicly converted to Catholicism to avoid persecution but privately continued to practice Judaism. The was followed by Jews who came to Mexico to avoid the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions, however, many of these Jews were forced to convert to Catholicism in what is known as the Mexican Inquisition.

Since then, there have been several waves of Jews, first from Germany in the 1860's, then from Russia and Romania in the 1880's, then Sephardi Jews as the result of the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and finally those fleeing the Nazis during WW2.

At this time, there are approximately 40,000 Jewish Mexicans. Additionally, many of the descendants of the original Conversos have discovered their heritage and are returning to full Judaism.l
