The only plant life on Antarctica is around the coastal areas. There are microscopic single cell plants called phytoplankton that live and multiply in water, and mosses, lichens and algae that can live under the snow and ice.

Penguins, seals, petrels, skuas and albatross constitute the main animal life on Antarctica.

The sea around the continent is rich in wildlife.

Several seal species breed exclusively in Antarctica including the Leopard Seal (Seal Conservation Society),
the Crabeater Seal (Wikipedia) and the Ross Seal (Seal Conservation Society). Remarkably, the Emperor Penguin (Wikipedia) breeds during the antarctic winter. Two other birds also breed solely in Antarctica, the South Polar Skua (AAD) and the Antarctic Petrel (BirdInfo).

The antarctic dragonfish genera Cygnodraco (eol) and Prionodraco (eol), the recently described eelpout genus Gosztonyia (Wildlife Extra), and the barbled plunderfish genera Histiodraco (eol) and Dolloidraco (FishBase) are unique to antarctic waters. Among other fish endemic to these frigid waters are the Naked Dragonfish Gymnodraco acuticeps(Underwater Field Guide to Ross Is.), the Sharp-spined Notothen Trematomus pennellii (eol), Charcot's Pseudo-icefish Parachaenichthys charcoti (eol), and a crocodile icefish Pagetopsis macropterus (eol).

Land invertebrates include a number of endemic springtails (Bishop Museum pdf file) including one, Anurophorus subpolaris, known as far south as 84° 47' S (Te Papa). Antarctica has a number of unique freshwater diatom species (Antarctic Freshwater Diatoms).

Families of marine invertebrates known only from Antarctica include coldwater corals of the family Ainigmaptilidae (Smithsonian pdf file) and the Glacial Squid (Tree of Life). Other endemic marine invertebrates include a gastropod Pleurotomella endeavourensis (Te Papa), a nudibranch Notaeolidia schmekelae (Underwater Field Guide to Ross Is.), a sponge Acanthopolymastia acanthoxa (p. 5 of Zootaxa pdf file), an isopod crustacean Eurycope crassiramis (Zootaxa pdf file), and an amphipod crustacean Eusirus giganteus (SCAR-MarBIN). Recently over 700 new species of marine invertebrates have been discovered off Antarctica (BBC).

A moss species Grimmia lawiana (Handbook of Antarctic Mosses) is known only from Antarctica , but there are no endemic vascular plant species.

The most numerous plants in Antarctica are lichens, which live on rocks mainly in the areas which are ice-free part of the year. There are also mosses, liverworts, and two types of flowering plant, the Pearlwort and the Hair Grass.

No animals live in Antarctica: it's too cold. Several types of animals do come to the Antarctic beaches to breed, and the list includes skua, penguin and seal, of several varieties of each on the list.

There are a few mosses and grasses that can grow in the warmer parts of the Antarctic peninsula.
