Yes, indeed. They were both dramatists writing at about the same time. Marlowe wrote a lot fewer plays and his plays are primarily tragedies but he used the same blank verse Shakespeare did. The styles are similar, as much as both of them have a style similar to the many other playwrights writing at the time.

What are the differences between Shakespeare and Marlowe?

It is highly unlikely that Marlowe wrote Shakespeare's plays, for a number of reasons. First, for a while there, they were both writing, and their styles are different. Second, Marlowe died in 1593, when Shakespeare was at the very start of his career, and an awful lot of people would have to be inexplicably lying for a period of over twenty years for there to have been a conspiracy to cover up Marlowe's non-death. Finally, everybody at the time seems to have agreed that it was Shakespeare writing the plays and there is no coherent reason why we should doubt that.

Was Christopher Marlowe a friend of Shakespeare?

How did Christopher know Shakespeare you ask? He knew him through the people of the town. There is no existing record of them meeting, but it seems unlikely that they wouldn't have crossed paths at some point. At the beginning of Shakespeare's career they both were writing for the same theatre, the Rose, and would have both been in the same social circles. They were rivals through the plays they wrote and acted.

Describe Shakespeare's language?

Shakespeare's language was very flowery and elaborate. It sounds overly complicated to modern ears, but people at the time would have understood it perfectly. Furthermore, Shakespeare invented a lot of modern words and phrases, so modern language owes him a huge debt of gratitude.

What did Shakespeare do different than anyone else who lived during that time?

Shakespeare did not necessarily do anything different from anybody else, but he did a number of things better. Had Marlowe lived, there may have been a close rivalry between them as far as the preeminent playwright was concerned. Shakespeare managed to profit from his acting, playwrighting, and ownership in the acting company, and the two theaters in which they performed, as well as real estate deals back home in Stratford, on top of writing his sonnets and mentoring young playwrights to succeed him.

Did Christopher Marlowe have anything to do with Shakespeare?

Although Marlowe and Shakespeare were about the same age (Marlowe was two months older), Marlowe died before Shakespeare's career really got started. If, as some believe, Shakespeare spent a significant portion of his "lost years" in the London theatre world, he could not have avoided being in contact with Marlowe. What is more, Marlowe's style had considerable influence on the theatrical world even after his death, and must have influenced Shakespeare and all the other young writers of the day. Although the fact that Marlowe died in 1593 and Shakespeare's writing really started to take off at about the same time makes it tempting to wonder whether Marlowe faked his death and took over Shakespeare's identity, it is ridiculous to imagine Marlowe trying to get a grant of arms for John Shakespeare or negotiating the marriage between Susannah Shakespeare and John Hall. ( To say nothing about what Anne must have said when the new Will Shakespeare arrived in Stratford. "Hello dear--My God! Will, you've changed--you look just like Christopher Marlowe!"). Thanks to the enormous research efforts of Leslie Hotson in the 1920s we now have the actual detailed minutes of the Coroner's Inquest into Marlowe's death.

What are the differences between the film and novel the big sleep?

The relationship between Vivian and Marlowe is more prominent. Hawk does this by adding or changing scenes to make Vivian appear vulnerable or to add sexual tension. There is not a really big emphasis on Geiger's homosexual relationship with Carol Lundgren or his porn ring. There is no relationship between Silver-wig(Mona Mars) and Marlowe that there is in the book. When Mona kisses Marlowe it symbolises that even the most faithful wife can not resist Marlowe. In the book Harry Jones doesn't rescue Marlowe from Eddie Mars' men, instead Marlowe catchers him tailing him. In the book when Marlowe brings Carmen home after discovering her at Geiger's home(she was naked in the novel not in the film) the maid Matilda helps him, in the film Vivian assists him, this is to add to Marlowe and Vivian's relationship. The ending is also different. Vivian rescues Marlowe not Silver-wig and they end up going back to Geiger's house in order to set up Mars. They successfully set Mars up and in the end he is accidentally shot by his own men. The ending in the book is extremely different. There is no final scene at Geiger's house instead, Carmen asks Marlowe to teacher her how to shoot at their oil field the same place she shots Regan when he rejected her. Marlowe is ahead of her and loads the gun with blanks. When she turns on him he rushes at her and she passes out(mild epileptic fit). He is taking her home when she comes round, and she notices that she has wet herself. Marlowe is talking to Vivian the next and tells her what happened between Regan and Carmen and how she needs to be sent away to a special place where she will be watched constantly. Vivian is given three days before Marlowe will come out with the truth. It finished off with him thinking about the 'Big Sleep'
