Asiatic black bears are found in Japan on the islands of Kyushu, Honshu and Shikoku. Hokkaido is populated by brown bears. In correcting a previous entry here I must point out that Panda bears are native only to China and are not native to Japan.

The IUCN's vulnerably listed Asian black bear (Ursus thibetanus), also known as the Moon bear or White-chested bear, is indigenous to Japan's Honshu and Shikoku islands. They were described by Rudyard Kiplingas 'the most bizarre of the ursine species.'
