Both their names contain an S == Both have genealogies tracing their descent from ancestral kings. Both were born of virgin mothers. The conception of each was announced by a divine messenger. The hymns uttered at the two annunciations resemble each other. Both were visited by wise men who brought them gifts. Both were presented in the temple. The aged Simeon of the one account corresponds to the aged Asita of the other. As "the child (Jesus) grew and waxed strong in spirit," so "the child (Sakay-Muni) waxed and increased in strength." Both in childhood discoursed before teachers. Both fasted in the wilderness. Both were tempted. Angels or devatas ministered to each. Buddha bathed in the Narajana, and Christ was baptized in the Jordan. The mission of each was proclaimed by a voice from Heaven. Both performed miracles. Both sent out disciples to propagate their faiths. In calling their disciples the command of each was, "Follow me." Buddha preached on the Holy Hill, and Christ delivered his sermon on the Mount. The phraseology of the sermons of Buddha and the sermon ascribed to Christ is, in many instances, the same. Both Buddha and Christ compare themselves to husbandmen sowing seed. The story of the prodigal son is found in both Scriptures. The account of the man born blind is common to both. In both the Mustard Seed is used as a simile for littleness. Christ speaks of "a foolish, man, which built his house upon the sand"; Buddha says, "Perishable is the city built of sand." Both speak of "the rain which falls on the just and on the unjust." The story of the ruler, Nicodemus, who came to Jesus by night, has its parallel in the story of the rich man who came to Buddha by night. A converted courtesan, Magdalena, followed Jesus, and a converted courtesan, Ambapali, followed Buddha. There is a legend of a traitor connected with each. Both made triumphal entries, Christ into Jerusalem, and Buddha into Rajagriba. Both proclaimed kingdoms not of this world. The eternal life promised by Christ corresponds to the eternal peace, Nirvana, promised by Buddha. Both religions recognize a trinity.

Buddha formulated the following commandments. "Not to kill; not to steal; not to lie; not to commit adultery; not to use strong drink."

Christ said. "Thou knowest the commandments, do not commit adultery; do not kill; do not steal; do not bear false witness; honor thy father and thy mother" (18: 20).

Christ ignored the Decalogue (Ten Commandments) of Moses and, like Buddha, presented a condensed commandments, which, with the exception of one commandment, is the same as that of Buddha.

The Buddha predates Jesus by almost 500 years.

Both went to their temples at the age of twelve, where they are said to have astonished all with their wisdom.

Both fasted in solitude. Buddha for 47 days and Jesus for 40.

At the conclusion of their fasts they both wandered to a fig tree.

Both were about the same age when the began their public ministry: When he [Buddha] went again to the garden he saw a monk who was calm, tranquil, self-possessed, serene, and dignified. The prince determined to become such a monk, was led to make the great denunciation. At the time he was 29 years of age....Jesus when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age... Luke 3:23

Answer: They were all holy men who believed God had chosen them for a purpose; they were also founders of new religions (though Christ did not seem to intend to establish a religion whilst the other two did).

What are the similarities and differences between Sikh and Christian worship?

A:Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak in the sixteenth century and has approximately 20,000,000 adherents mainly located chiefly in the Punjab region of India. Nanak attempted to integrate the best in Hinduism and Islam into a new inclusive religion, so we can expect many similarities in the beliefs of Sikhism and Islam. Then, because there are many similarities between Islam and Christianity, we can also expect some similarities between Sikhism and Christianity. Nanak taught a devotional monotheism, referring to God as The True Name, but also accepted the Hindu principle of reincarnation, the law of karma and the Hindu doctrine of Maya or illusion. Of course, Sikhism does not have the Christian concept of the Holy Trinity. Arguably the greatest practical difference between the two faiths is in Sikhism's emphasis on tolerance of other beliefs, whereas Christianity has always tended in some degree towards intolerance. The scripture of Sikhism is the Granth (book) which is an anthology of many poems somewhat like the book of Psalms and wisdom literature of the Bible.
