Yes, your dog or any pet can and will be hurt and possibly become extremely ill or die from toad toxin. Not all toads produce this toxin, of course, but there are certain areas where the toads are teeming in and around populated areas. I watched this on a nature program on cable t.v. Sorry, I can not remember where the areas are that have to be on constant alert for the toads and the danger they pose to man and animal but I'm sure your veterinarian would be able to tell you.

The short answer is yes, all toads secrete toxins. the toads in Ontario are mildly toxic. My dogs like to pack up on the wee guys and I have to go rescue the toads from the dogs before they get trampled by the big guy. the terriers, being , well , you know, terriers, will pick them up then quickly spit them out as the toads secrete horrible tasting stuff in defense (not that I've ever tasted one). The terriers usually salivate heavily for a few minutes but no lasting effects after that..although the one terrier will continue to try and grab the toad until I remove the poor thing from the premises. they've never managed to actually eat one, which is probably a good thing as then there might be some big issues. I just rescued a couple of toads this morning from the bedlington terrier...he's at least learned not to mouth them as much...picks them up with his teeth, then gets a taste and drops them, shakes his head a few times then right back at it. No salivating this time, just making pre vomit noises for a minute...silly dog....but still , better then the time they harassed a skunk..ugh.

No. They do squirt blood out of their eyes as a defensive mechanism, but it isn't poisonous so don't worry if they come in with some blood, and their spikes may be harmful to their mouths if bitten, but it's doubtful. Coyotes eat them.

Yes, to small dogs if they ingest the toxic secretions the toad releases as a defense.

Usually, toads don't have to evade their predators because of the "blobs" on their backs called Parotoid Glands. These produce a lot of poison that will usually kill a dog. The toads colours on its back also represent the poisonous glands it has.
