One reason is it can grow rapidly. A virus is much like the way people evulved. Not all at once did we go from being cavemen to our present day. It starts with someone learning something than their lifetime runs out, than the next person picks up we the previous left off and continues to carry it and grow to the next level until they die off and hand the baton to the next and so on and so on.
So a virus grows in that manner but at a much quicker rate. Depending on the virus the time may vary.
