As I understand it Orange was the color that was used to represent Sir William of orange an Irish Catholic hating protestant. I have never seen or heard of anyone wearing orange on St. Patrick's Day.

There are still some people who believe that to wear yellow or orange (particularity the latter) on St. Patrick's Day is an insult to all Irish people, but that view is dying out with each succeeding generation. It had to do with William of Orange being though of as a villain by all Irish people.
