A simple test to determine if one is overweight is to compute one's Body Mass Index (BMI). Formulated by Belgian statistician Adolphe Quelet, the BMI has become an international standard for defining different levels of obesity.
There is a single BMI calculation; however, interpretation is different based on the subject's age (adult vs. child). The formula is as follows:
(imperial) BMI = (weight / (height * height)) * 703
where weight is in pounds and height is in inches
(metric) BMI = (weight / (height * height))
where weight is in kilograms and heights is in meters
So, someone who is 5 feet tall and weighs 130 pounds would have a BMI measure of:
(130 / (60 * 60)) * 703 = 25.4
For adults, a BMI of 25 to 30 suggests someone that is overweight and a BMI of over 30 suggests someone that is obese.
For children, charts are used to determine obesity relative to age and gender.
At 14 years old, a boy with a BMI of 25.4 weighs more, on average, than 92% of all of the boys at the same age. A 14yo girl with the same BMI weighs more, on average, than 90% of all girls at the same age.
If you can perform a standing broad jump of over 10 feet, that would be an astounding feat. He injured both feet while attempting the dangerous feat.
Over 100 feat!
