Are you supposed to hold your puppy dogs?

This depends to a large extent on the amount of trust the mother dog has in you. If she sees you as her "pack leader," she may not object. However, it is best NOT to handle newborns unless absolutely necessary, as it can cause some mother dogs to reject them. A good rule of thumb to observe is not to handle or hold the pups until they're old enough to stand and walk around on their own; about 3-4 weeks of age.
