Mao's Great Leap Forward was aimed at industrializing China after Soviet support was withdrawn. He attempted to implement Stalin's Five Year Plan (which was not successful) and confiscated all the lands that had previously been given to the peasants. Instead, they were put into communes to increase production. The end result, as it had been under Stalin, was famine.
