Technically, yes and no. Voldemort does hit Harry with a killing curse and both he and Harry are sent to a sort of Limbo. Harry is then given the choice - he can return to the real world to save his friends and defeat Voldemort once and for all, or he can "go on" to the next phase of death. Of course as a hero he chooses life.
He's 36. It's the 7th book, so he's 17...and then the epilogue says that it is 19 years later. 17 + 19 = 36. :D
