Trina Paulus was born in Cleveland Ohio in 1932. The oldest of four children. She always looked forward to going to her uncles farm in the country. It was like a step back in time with all the farm animals, the animal drawn equipment and the outhouse. Some of her first watercolor paintings she did were pictures of the farm. She was about eight years old when she discovered yellow clay in the creek behind her house where she started making sculptures. By the age of twelve, Edris Eckhardt hired her to be her assistant and to fire the glass kiln. Her family was devote Catholic and she attended a all girls Catholic school. It was here where she became involved with the 'Catholic Action' in the city. By the time she was out of high school her spiritual values were her passion. She then attended Grailville after turning down two full time scholarships to other schools. 'Hope For The Flowers' was written at a time in her life when she only had a five hundred dollar advance for writing a book and living with friends because she had nothing of value herself. The book was published in September of 1972, but she received no royalties from her work until October 1, 1973, which was the same month she gave birth to a son at the age of 43. She was married, but divorced and raised her son alone.
