On the left side, back in the "luggage" area, behind the wall carpeting, there are two junctions of wires. Check to see whether or not you put something in the rear that pulled any of these wires loose. If not, check your reverse switch on the reverse linkage. Your repair manual will show you where it is on each car, IF you have a manual. If you don't, ask a Ford mechanic or BUY a manual. They're only about $15. A mechanic will cost you anywhere from $75 - $100 just to look at it and diagnose.
Had the same problem with my GL. What I've heard is the back up blade in the shifting fork slips or falls out of line causing no contact when you shift into reverse. They have to replace reconnect thru transmission. 5 years without backup lights.
Check the backup light switch.
Check the fuses Check the backup switch Check the wiring - make sure that there is good contact.
The backup lights are a different bulb, then the turn signals and brake lights and The Number 1 reason would be that the bulbs are burned out and need replaced. Good Luck and Remember.Change Your Mind, Not Your Oil.Use the First In Synthetic Motor Oil's.See My Bio For Information & Contact Details.
check the ground for the lights
If the night running lights have failed the bulbs should be checked. Find the bulb housings and remove the parts. After the bulbs are replaced check the lights.
Check bulbs and switch
I would check the wires just behind the light. I had the same problem and the wires were broken a little just wiggle them as the lights are on.

Try checking the neutral safety switch. This switch is the one in automatic transmissions that makes the backup lights "flip" on when going from park to drive as you go through the gears. When my neutral safety switch shorted my backup lights stayed on constantly.
Did you recently change or install something in your car like a stereo or GPS?
Are you sure you need the fuse for the cruise control. My cruise control wasn't working, neither were my brake lights. All 7 bulbs were burnt out. When the brake lights were replaced the cruise control worked.
