Yes; upper right and lower left AED pads on patient.
1 pad upper right on patients chest. 1 pad lower left side, on the ribs.
on a child age 1-8 or weighing less than 55lbs
Place 1 pad on the chest and 1 on the back.
The defibrillator pads are typically placed on the upper right chest area and the lower left side of the chest. These placements help create a pathway for the electrical shock to travel through the heart and restore its normal rhythm when needed. Make sure the chest is clear of any obstructions (clothing, jewelry) before placing the pads.
Place pads on patient upper right chest and left side on the ribs.
Remember the saying "white upper right, red to the ribs". This refers to pads as placed on the patient. If the colors are the same on the pads and leads, then follow the icons on the pads themselves for placement upper right and on the ribs. All AEDs I have seen in the last few years all have icons on the pads for placement location on the patient.
You may still get good results; but maybe not. With the pads on wrong it is not shocking across the heart properly; don't chance it and remember white upper right and red to the ribs (on the victim) for pad placement.
There are several ways to figure this out, depending on the AED you are using.Remember the saying, "white upper right, red to the ribs" which refers to the location on the victim; the leads to the pads are usually colored white & red. Some pads have icons on them that show the location to be placed; i.e. one pad will show upper right on the chest and the other will show placement on the rib area on left side of chest on the victim. It the leads are not colored, or there are no icons on the pads, then it doesn't matter which pad is placed on the upper right of the chest or lower left on the ribs.An alternate placement, which has been shown to be marginally more effective, is one lead on the center of the chest and one on the back, just to the left of the spine, trying to avoid the scapula (shoulderblade). This provides a more direct route for the current to flow and (in some studies) has been shown to be more effective than the right upper chest/left lateral chest method.
For AED pad placement, remember the saying "White upper right, red to the ribs". These are the locations on the patient; one pad goes on the upper right of the chest; the other pad goes on the lower left side of the abdomen, on the ribs. It used to be the pad leads were white and red which denotes the location based on the color of the leads. Now, all the pads have icons on them which show the pad location upper right and lower left. For a child, it may require the pads located on the front of the chest, and on the back due to the size of the chest vs. the size of the pads. See the related link for examples.
Dextrocardia Situs Inversus refers to the heart being a mirror image situated on the right side. According to the related link, "When defibrillating someone with Dextrocardia, the defibrillator pads should be placed in reverse positions. That is, instead of upper right and lower left, pads should be placed upper left and lower right.".
As far as pad placement, the icons on the pads will show where they go on the victim; upper right on chest and lower left on the ribs. The AED will recognise if the contact between the pad and skin is correct; if not, the chest was not wiped off to remove the fluids or there is too much hair where the pad was placed.
